Mistakes made in raising a special child

OVER the last few years, many more educational and therapy centres have sprung up to cater to the needs of special children. It is good to see this healthy development; parents have more choices to pick from.
However, having said that, I hope they provide high quality services and their fees are reasonable. I also hope they provide guidance for parents.
My daughter is now 19 years old and I think I have come a long way. When she was just diagnosed as a slow learner, I remember I was given only two contacts. Apart from that, I wasn’t given any counselling nor any other support.
As I didn’t know better, I assumed that, with therapy, things would improve accordingly and my daughter would “catch up” and be ready for school when the time came. She was diagnosed as being Global Developmental Delayed, which didn’t sound like anything serious, or so I thought. That was my first mistake!
The second mistake was to totally rely on the professionals to handle the situation and to expect them to advise me accordingly.
They were good in what they did; however, they were not able to provide a “comprehensive guide”. I had assumed that therapy alone would address all her issues. I did not think to engage her in other relevant activities which would help her improve. I did not understand the science of cognitive development. I didn’t realise how one small weak spot would have a major impact on other areas of her development.
I tried my best to help her “move up the developmental chart”. That in itself was the right thing to do; however, I did not do the correct things in the proper sequence. Instead of fully concentrating on her speech and fine motor skills, I enrolled her for “early tuition” to prepare her for school. That was the third mistake!
I now realise that was not a good move. I hadn’t helped my daughter build a solid foundation, yet I pushed her to “construct the floors above”. She was still struggling with her fine motor skills, yet she was expected to write.
There I was, forcing her to practise more in order to improve her handwriting! Sure, practice makes perfect, but when your tools are inefficient, no amount of practice is going to do any good!
If I could turn back the clock, I would certainly pay attention to building her foundation skills and allocate more time for play. Now that I know better, I realise that play is a must-have activity. It is through play that a child gets to practise life skills in a fun and non-stressful manner.
In my daughter’s case, I should have brought her to the playground more often, played more board games and sent her for arts and crafts classes.
When she was in kindergarten, her teachers were patient and more lenient with her. And perhaps it was also because the teachers did not set a high benchmark for her that I thought she was doing as well as she could.
The true test came when she entered formal schooling. It was obvious that she couldn’t cope with the demands of school. The first three months were a real nightmare for me (and I am sure, for her, too).
In the first school, she was clearly lost in the sea of 45 classmates. So, I transferred her to a new school with around 20 students. There, she stood out like a sore thumb and soon, I was told she needed to go to a special class (at another school). I refused that option and began searching for a third school.
When I found a private school willing to help her, I thought it would be a happy ending. It was not, as she wasn’t able to cope and started having behavioural issues.
I was desperate, and certainly very near to a nervous breakdown when a friend suggested a home-school centre. Thank God the final option was a success, otherwise I would be the one needing professional help!
Looking back, it was truly a blessing in disguise that the regular schools didn’t work out for her. Although aged seven, I think her developmental level was that of a five year old, thus, she was clearly not ready for school.
Being in a home-school centre allowed her the opportunity to progress at her own pace (and never compared with her peers). By then, many mistakes were made but there was no time to cry over spilled milk.
I decided to take a few steps back and work on rebuilding her foundation. Her schoolwork became secondary; I spent more time helping her improve her social and communication skills. By then, thankfully, her fine motor skills were much improved and she was able to function rather independently.
Time has certainly flown by. The last decade has been spent helping my daughter cope with the different phases in her life. She is still behind in many areas and I suspect she will not “catch up”.
However, I remain positive that every new day is a day to learn something new, a fresh beginning for me as her mother/teacher/friend and for her, too. Oh! How I wish I had a mentor …. – ANNA WONG

May 5th My Birthday Wish

May 5th used to be a day which I celebrate with people who love me. But this year it coincides with our nation's 13th General Election. Suddenly I feel my birthday is celebrated with the whole nation. Since it is such a historical birthday, I would like to share my historical birthday wish with you.

This 0505 is a political awareness declaration day. The future of our nation will be very much in control by the winning party. Therefore my wish is to let those who have been through suffering to have the ruling power, because I believe that the suffering that they have experienced will make them humble and sensitive to the needs of the people. They are more likely to be honest, clean and transparent.

There is racism and religious discrimination in the current situation. I wish that the incoming government will respect and uphold our Rukun Negara principles, which are Belief in God, Loyalty to King and Country, Supremacy of the Constitution, Rule of Law and Courtesy and Morality.

Lastly, as a mother and a mother of a son with special needs, I wish the government will give our children a friendly, healthy and safe environment to grow. Let them have an equal opportunity of resources and education. For children with special needs, I wish the government will design and implement a special education plan that meets their individual learning needs and give them equal learning time and opportunity. I also wish the social concern department will create more awareness campaign to promote love and acceptance both to the special children and their families.

Phew, this is my first time writing such magnanimous birthday wish. I am fully aware that this is not my wish alone. To accomplish all these, we need your precious vote. Let us pray toward a same goal and wish for a better Malaysia. Amen.

Why is he so arrogant?

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery. He answered the call asap, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block. He found the boy’s father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad yelled:
“Why did U take all this time to come? Don’t U know that my son’s life is in danger? Don’t U have any sense of responsibility?”

The doctor smiled & said:
“I am sorry, I wasn't in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call…… And now, I wish you’d calm down so that I can do my work”

“Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would U calm down? If your own son dies now what will U do??” said the father angrily

The doctor smiled again & replied: “I will say what Job said in the Holy Book “From dust we came & to dust we return, blessed be the name of God”. Doctors cannot prolong lives. Go & intercede for your son, we will do our best by God’s grace”

“Giving advises when we’re not concerned is so easy” Murmured the father.

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy,
“Thank goodness!, your son is saved!” And without waiting for the father’s reply he carried on his way running. “If U have any question, ask the nurse!!”

“Why is he so arrogant? He couldn't wait some minutes so that I ask about my son’s state” Commented the father when seeing the nurse minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face: “His son died yesterday in a road accident, he was in the burial when we called him for your son’s surgery. And now that he saved your son’s life, he left running to finish his son’s burial.”

Moral-Never judge anyone….. because U never know how their life is & what they’re going through”

Empty Chairs at Empty Tables

here's a grief that can't be spoken. there's a pain goes on and on
Empty chairs at empty tables, now my friends are dead and gone.

10th Anniversary October 1995 at the Royal Albert Hall Version.

Grief is the silent, knife-like terror and sadness that comes a hundred times a day, when you start to speak to someone who is no longer there. (Edgar Jackson)

1997

I was in the land (1997) when Bibi was the 14th Prime Minister. And now he is the Prime Minister again ... and i am going there again, this time to Mount Carmel School of Ministry ... rejoice! (September 25, 2012)

Today our worship leader wanted to sing a song from our long produced Chinese album – 祝福 (Blessings). I took out the album and listened to those songs again. I was in love with the voices and the lyrics ministered to me afresh.
I told Andrew that, I was pregnant with him when I did the recording of this album.

Then a thought came to me, I am to tell my dear friend that these songs are going to put colors into her season of life again, our voices are going to heard again. I have decided to use some of the songs for my coming “十架苦路” (Via Dolorosa) project…I am getting excited!

As I put back the CD into the casing, I realized that this album was produced in 1997!! Kairos. (October 5, 2012)

Ah Beng

Ah Beng buys a bottle of oil

Ah Beng goes into grocery shop and buys a
can of oil.

After paying for the oil, Ah Beng asks the shopkeeper , “Where is my free gift ? ”

The shopkeeper replied, “ This oil does not come with a free gift”. But Ah Beng insists, “ You try to cheat me ah…..”

Shopkeeper replied, “ No sir, there is no free gift for this oil”.

Ah Beng got annoyed and took up the can of oil and said, “ Aaai yah…..You cannot read English….it says here Cholesterol FREE!"

Ah Beng in a Biology Experiment with a cockroach

Ah Beng was doing a Biology experiment to see how much suffering a cockroach can endure.

First he cut out one leg and told the cockroach, “WALK. WALK”.

The cockroach walked. Then he cut its second leg and said the same thing. The cockroach walked. Then he cut the third leg and repeated the command. The cockroach walked.

Finally, he cut its fourth leg and ordered it to walk! But cockroach didn't walk. So Ah Beng wrote this conclusion for his Biology experiment, “ When we cut 4 legs off a cockroach, it becomes deaf”.

60年婚姻的秘诀

The Shoebox

A man and woman had been married for more than 60 years. They had shared everything. They had talked about everything. They had kept no secrets from each other except that the little Old woman had a shoe box in the top of her closet that she had cautioned her husband never to open or ask her about.

For all of these years, he had never thought about the box, but one day the little old woman got very sick and the doctor said she would not recover. In trying to sort out their affairs, the little old man took down the shoe box and took it to his wife's bedside. She agreed that it was time that he should know what was in the box. When he opened it, he found two crocheted dolls and a stack of money totaling $95,000.

He asked her about the contents. 'When we were to be married,' she said, ' my grandmother told me the secret of a happy marriage was to never argue. She told me that if I ever got angry with you, I should just keep quiet and crochet a doll.' The little old man was so moved; he had to
fight back tears. Only two precious dolls were in the box.

She had only been angry with him two times in all those years of living and loving. He almost
burst with happiness. 'Honey,' he said, 'that explains the doll, but what about all of this money? Where did it come from?' 'Oh,' she said, 'that's the money I made from selling the dolls.'

我活在神的同在中(下)

Last week was heavy due to a number of works at hand needed to be done for the weekend. By Saturday night, I can feel my brain was well used and 有点脑麻痹的感觉 (a numbness sensation in the brain). Those of you who have been sharing my workload, I would like to say "Thanks for journeying with me." I would like to share with you how this wonderful week ended with a miracle .

As I was preparing a Via Dolorosa devotion which climax to April 8th
Easter service in Chinese Church and in the midst of preparing lectures for BCM's classes in the coming term to teach on Life of Christ, I was hinking
about the Holy Land again. It was an unspoken desire; it will be nice if I can step in the Land again and refresh my memory and feel the life of Christ on earth again.

My last visit to the Holy Land was about 15-16 years ago (before Andrew was born), which not only left me with cognitive knowledge about the Land but also a special encounter which brought my heart closer to our Lord. So …that visit has a 珍贵的角落 (a special corner) in my heart.

During Sunday service, I plan to bring everyone to experience Via Dolorosa by circling the hall as i lead the devotion for each station. I told the church, since we can’t do this in the Holy Land, let us do it here. Someone in the group appreciate what I was doing because she said it is now very costly to visit the Holy Land. It was a good experience on Sunday even though there are rooms for improvement on the devotional write up.

I ended the service by listening to a song and as we all move out to have our breakfast, at the doorway, someone walk up to me, passing me a bottle of olive oil from Jerusalem and a broacher in his hand saying: “If you are able to make it this November, I would like to pay for your study tour to Israel.” I was not sure what I heard so I ask again, “You are talking about me going to Jerusalem? Are you serious? Oh! I want to cry now!...” I was pleasantly surprised by the offer.  It is KAIROS!

Last Saturday, as I was laying on bed .... thinking about a project; a Via Dolorosa devotion study publication for 2013 Easter. I am thinking about ways to enhance both the knowledge and the experience part of the project. I believe the less than 20 pages Via Dolorosa devotion study project will bless many Chinese speaking Christian.

Now I am going to the Holy Land in November, wow! I will be ON TIME to bring back some jewels for the project. It is KAIROS!

As usual, many worries and concerns arises within seconds. The main one is, if I go, means I am going miss the final subject for Dip. in Counseling again!! The course will only be conducted in November this year and i need this final subject for graduation.
(I missed this last subject 2 years ago due to working on Key Magazine for BCM). Secondly, how about Victor, I think it is going to be school holiday too (9th Nov onward).

Never the less, the conviction to go was strong and intense. I walked back to main hall, and tell the kind sponsor that, “Thank you for the offer. I WILL GO!”

Yesterday, came back from class, I found my sponsor for the trip already drop the application form in my inbox... saying: I believe our father God wants to bless you for this trip. Thank Him to fulfill your heart desire. It is a wonderful invitation by the Lord and my sponsor. God knows the desire of my heart!

“I cannot rejoice over the fact that Victor is deaf, but neither am I feeling bitter about it. I believed in the God that I served. There must be a purpose behind this. It could be that God is trying to enlarge our love to minister to the unfortunate one or preparing us to understand and stand beside certain people that may come on our way. ”
This was my journal on Oct 9th 1993; 6 months after Victor was born. After 18 years, I was given the opportunity to share my special journey of grace with a special group of parents. The culmination of years of preparation is finally put forth to bless others. Thanks to the God that I served!

From the Book

Some decision making has to be based on the Book and not
by feeling.
The Book has clear rules, direct instructions, sound advices and proven methods.
“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth;
meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
